Save-A-Stray – Finding Dogs Forever Homes

Guest Post by J.C.W.

Save-A-Stray is a foster based (501c3) rescue working in Mobile, Alabama to transport dogs to a sister rescue called Helping Hounds, where many dogs are finding their new homes.

Save-A-Stray relies solely on foster homes being opened up so they can help as many dogs as possible. The unique thing about Save-A-Stray is they only need foster homes available for two weeks at a time.

While Save-A-Stray tends to pull from the City of Mobile Animal Shelter and the Saraland Animal Shelter, they are also very concerned with the community and try to help the public as much as possible! Save-A-Stray will take Owner Surrenders from the community (excepting pit-type dogs due to a policy of Helping Hounds).

Fostering: A Personal Testimony

I have been fostering through Save-A-Stray for nearly 6 months now and have fostered 10 puppies in those few short months!

I’ve totally fallen in love with this rescue. Some of that may be due to my first foster puppy. My first foster was a 6-month-old shepherd mix that Save-A-Stray had named Courtney. I love all my foster puppies, but Courtney was a perfect angel! I don’t know her whole story but I do know she came from the Saraland Animal Shelter. I believe she was an owner surrender since she came mostly house-trained and crate-trained which truly shocked me! She was so good at her house training she was able to sleep in the bed with me! I had the great privilege of fostering her for two short weeks and during that time I taught her how to Sit, Lay Down, and Stay on command. I just couldn’t understand how someone could no longer want such an amazing puppy!

Courtney!

The best part about fostering with Save-A-Stray is the updates we, the fosters, get to see usually once a month after our foster-puppies have been adopted. I love when we receive updates on how our precious foster babies are doing in their new families!

Save-A-Stray Transports

After two weeks with their foster homes, all the pups load up for their trip to NY! Foster volunteers typically meet on the first Thursday of the month for Foster Pick-up Day and Transport is usually the third Thursday of every month.

Dogs are euthanized daily due to overpopulation in many shelters and Save-A-Stray tries very hard to reduce the number of dogs euthanized in shelters. This is exactly why I love this rescue so much! I honestly don’t know what the major difference is between Alabama and New York, but New York’s adoption rate is amazing!

Save-A-Stray’s sister rescue, Helping Hounds Dog Rescue, is located in Dewitt, New York, and an amazing volunteer, along with her family, travels up there once a month so the Alabama pups can have a chance of finding amazing forever homes!

Both Foster Homes and On-site Volunteers are needed for the many tasks that keep the organization running. Below are some of the ways volunteers can help out. In addition, foster homes are always needed to provide dogs with two-to-four weeks of care before Transport Day.
